One of the most succesfull and older of these soldiers (Russell) is pitted against a new breed of soldiers, and after the confrontation is believed to be dead. His body is left behind in a semi-abandoned colonial planet, where everything is peaceful, and he is taught about the other aspects of life. But eventually he has to fight the new breed of soldiers again, this time to defend his new home…
Sergeant Todd (Russell) is a veteran soldier for the an elite group of the armed forces of Earth. After being defeated by a new breed of genetically engineered soldiers, he is dumped on a waste planet and left for dead. He soon interacts with a group of crash survivors who lead out a peaceful existence on the planet. The peace is soon brokenthe new breed of soldiers lands to eliminate the colony, which Sergeant Todd must defend.
I don't care what the critics say about this film (or most any other film for that matter). I think it was brilliantly done.<br/><br/>Sure, it's got similarities to other sci-action flicks. Sure, some of the scenes could be called straight rip-offs from various other films. But, remember, Alien is a rip-off of Beowulf, the Terminator is a rip-off of the story of Hercules and the Hydra, and Titanic is a rip-off of Romeo and Juliet - from the wrong perspective, that is. Always new, always the same. In other words, this movie, Soldier, isn't a rip-off any more than those were. Inspired and influenced by, sure, why not.<br/><br/>Kirk Douglas (I hope I spelled his name correctly!) does a great job. Most people have trouble conveying emotions and thoughts through words and expressive faces, and he manages to convey whole paragraphs and deep emotions through a silent near-deadpan. That takes some serious skill. Try standing in front of a mirror, holding the kind of poker-face he has through most of the movie, and conveying even the slightest bit of the "fear and discipline" that is evident throughout the movie.<br/><br/>The scene where he is "exercising" on that metal container, is one of the most accurate and perfect depictions of the way a trained berserker works. Rambo's flashbacks were pathetic, Todd's (the Soldier) are tremendously well done.<br/><br/>Okay, so the "science" in it is horribly inaccurate, though not nearly so badin Star Wars, and the idea that the garbage ships would have pressurized air of a breathable sort in their cargo section is laughable. But those data are incidental to the story, which is the story of hard-working men and women, raised to a certain lifestyle, being replaced by "improved technology". Set to a military theme sure, but recognizable to anyone who has ever been told "your skills are out of date, and we're downsizing" or who has ever been passed over for a promotion in favor of some youngster straight out of college. And that story is well told.<br/><br/>And, if that isn't enough for you, the lead actress is just plain stunningly beautiful. Worth watching just to see her (and, yes, she is fully dressed or at least decently and modestly covered throughout the film - I'm talking beauty here, not just raw sex appeal).<br/><br/>I wouldn't put this film in the same levelThe Thirteenth Warrior, butaction flicks go, it's definitely one of my top 20.
The only thing wrong with this movie is that to enjoy it you have to have a very open mind, a good imagination, and you really have to WATCH the show. There are so many nuances and insinuations that most people will miss them. On the surface it seems like another shoot-em-up, but looking at ita drama reveals its depth. As with all sci-fi movies, it seems to borrow from other flicks. While the director and writer admit to a few nods to other films, it should really be watcheda standalone movie.<br/><br/>You won't like it if you're looking for some mindless entertainment where you don't have to think. There isn't quite enough to totally put your brain aside. You'll have to engage your intellect to truly appreciate the more subtle levels of this film.<br/><br/>But, don't get me wrong… this isn't an amazing work of art, either. Just a decent movie with surprising depth. Worth renting, to be sure. Rent it on DVD and watch it with the director's commentary the second time - it's worth it.

Soldier is a violent science fiction action film starring Kurt RussellSargeant Todd, an cold hardened space marine, whom was chosen at birth to be a soldier, whom is dumped and left to die on Arcadia 234, a garbage planet, when he is knocked unconscious in a fight with Caine 607 (Jason Scott Lee), a genetically engineered new breed of soldier. On the planet, Todd is befriend and nursed back to health by the survivors of a crashed spaceship, that have set up a colony on the planet and Todd struggles to adjust to living a normal life, due to his conditioning and traininga soldier. But, when Colonel Meckham (Jason Issacs), Caine 607 and the genetic engineered soldier's commanding officer orders Caine 607 and the genetic engineered soldiers to eliminate the crash survivors,part of an training routine. Todd uses his combat skills and decides to protect the crash survivors and takes on the genetic engineered soldiers in a one man war. As an aside, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson has stated thatfarhe is concerned, his film Soldier is a 'sidequel' to Blade Runner,it occurs in the same fictional milieuScott's film, although it is not actually a follow-up (Soldier was co-scripted by Blade Runner screenwriter David Peoples).<br/><br/>Reference- One of the battle names tattooed on Todd's arm.
